Last night our language school's soccer team took on a team called the Grüne Tulpen (literally: Green Tulips) and creamed them 4 to 2. My teammates Andy and Dan were out there kickin' it with the best of 'em. The most hilarious part of the whole thing is that the Grüne Tulpen is the soccer team of the Green Party, a major political party in Germany. We heard rumors that Joschka Fischer, the previous party leader, used to play on the team, but he doesn't anymore. Sad. He had some pretty funny commercials when he was running for chancellor a few years ago, so I would have been very amused to see him in person. No luck on that front, but all of the players were in the parliament, so that's still pretty cool if you ask me.

I'm working on discovering Berlin bit by bit and I'd like you, my loyal blog readers, to come along for the ride with me. Hence, I plan on bringing my camera on my little strolls (I most often have it with me anyway) and photographing noteworthy, funny, pretty things along the way to share. Today, I set out along the canal near our house and headed west. Pretty much any kind of food imaginable is available in Berlin. Mostly, I thought this sign (on Kottbusser Damm near our apartment) was funny because the official name of the restaurant is Vietnam Food. Good naming, guys. Very effective. This sign marks the spot where the awesome market happens in our neighborhood on Tuesdays and Friday. I like that they put a camel on there to demonstrate that they... sell camels at the market? There were tons of people outside today since it was sunny and warm. The trees are starting to turn, so the canal was especially pretty. There are chestnuts falling all over the place. When they fall off of the tree, they are inside these shells, which my teammate Jon refers to as "spike balls." Here's some more of the thousands of people who were out enjoying the water today. I couldn't figure out if this was supposed to be art or if someone just felt like stringing a bunch of stuff up in this tree. Never in my life did I expect that having an old set of box springs would make me soooo happy. But let me tell you, after 2 weeks on a thin mattress on the floor, box springs are like heaven. It was quite an experience getting said box springs to my apartment. It went like this: These are my ghetto-fabulous curtains. This is what we will call the result of me and Amanda not really having dressers in our room yet: piles of sweaters on the desk-type thing. This is definitely the neatest part of my piles of stuff right now, too. But at least there is Apfelschorle in the midst of my chaos At the request of a bunch of friends, I thought I should finally update my blog since I have been in Berlin for a week and a half already. For your reading pleasure, I will divide my update into three handy-dandy bullet pointed lists: The new stint girls took a little trip down to Wannsee the other day while it was sunny. The adorable Asian girl in front is Elaine, our new British teammate. She taught us to say things like "dodgy" and "cheers." |
